First update from the Island

This was my first update after being on the island for a week:

Well I have now been here a week and so far I am loving it. The island is beautiful, if a little cold and overcast at times.
I am living with three girls and one chap in a little house in Peel on the west coast of the island, less than a minutes walk from the sea.

Sightings are few and far between at the moment as we are waiting for the dolphins and basking sharks to arrive. Yesterday we went out on the Manx Whale and Dolphin Watch boat to see whether there were any marine animals in the viscinity, we saw a few harbour porpoise but nohing else other than an array of birds including gannets, choughs, oyster cachers and cormorants/shags (We still can't tell the difference!).
The sea was a perfect glassy calm and it was so lovely to be out on the water... Hopefully next time we will see some more wildlife!

The day after we did two land watches totaling 6 hours and didn't see a sausage!

I am getting very excited about the arrival of the
basking sharks. It looks as though my main responsibility will be filming their behaviour, however I will also be involved in carrying out abundance surveys, photo id and even dns smapling and tagging of these huge creatures than can grow to be as long as a bus!

So there is not much to report yet, but I will keep you updated once the excitement begins!
